Recently, I had not read any novels. Sometimes I read some pages of novels which I had read before, but that was all. I bought this book for Advanced Discussion in English class, but I finally dropped the course. Thus this book was left being not read.
The story starts with a teenager boy who runs across a woman in thirties. The boy gets into her, and they finally belong together. The parts in which they make love are also interesting, but those parts are the seed for the guilt which the boy(Michael) feels after the woman(Hanna) does something immoral.
At first, I think that I can get some life lessons from this book because the professor of Advanced Discussion class said, "This is a good book, and there are a lot to discuss." However, the book was not like that. Rather, it was a good opportunity to get to know the thinking of Germans about the Holocaust. It was a unexpected discovery, and I had a chance to think about 'What is guilty', 'How should I act if I am ordered an immoral thing', or like that.
Before finishing, I want to comment that some of this novel reminded me of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. But this time, the younger one is a boy, rather than a girl in Lolita. For I found Lolita quite interesting and experimental, I think that The Reader is also a good trial for those who read Lolita already. |
